Uddhav Sandesh has been published in both Bengali and Hindi, and the appearance of its eleventh edition in 2002 stands as a testament to its enduring popularity.
According to the sacred narrative, Uddhav, the wise disciple of Brihaspati (Jupiter) and intimate friend of Lord Krishna, was sent by Krishna to Vrindavan as a messenger. Beyond merely delivering a message, this journey was intended to deepen Uddhav’s spiritual understanding through the unparalleled devotion of the Gopis. Upon arriving in Braj, he witnessed Nanda Maharaj, Mother Yashoda, and the Gopis immersed in profound sorrow due to Krishna’s departure from Vrindavan.
Uddhav sought to console Nanda Maharaj by explaining that Krishna was none other than the Supreme Lord Himself. However, he soon realized that ordinary worldly attachments and the divine love of the residents of Braj were fundamentally different. While worldly people are blinded by material attachments, the inhabitants of Braj were wholly absorbed in pure love for Krishna. Because of this transcendental devotion, philosophical teachings alone could not alleviate their grief.
Observing the intense longing and separation felt by the Gopis, Uddhav became deeply astonished. He reflected that the mystery of their divine love was beyond his understanding and that his journey to Vrindavan was perhaps intended to teach him the true meaning of devotion and the profound spiritual significance of separation from the Beloved.
The Gopis, in turn, revealed the depth of their relationship with Krishna. They explained that Krishna had not merely praised them with words but had united them with Himself through pure love. Uddhav then conveyed Krishna’s message:
“Mahatinam viyogo me na hi sarvatmana kvachit” —
“O Gopis, there can never be any separation between you and Me, for the Supreme Self is eternally present within all beings.”
For realized souls, this is an eternal and unquestionable truth. Yet, for the purpose of divine pastimes (lila), experiences of union, separation, longing, and reunion continue to unfold between the Lord and His devotees. Through these sacred emotions, the highest mysteries of devotion are revealed.
